Written by KGF Vissers[1]

Errors and Explanations[]

Internet Movie Database[]

Factual errors[]

  • In the scene at the end of the movie when the German tank attacks the escaping British prisoners, it has a large swastika in between the drivers port and the hull machine gun. German Panzers did not have large swastikas on the front. This could have been an unofficial marking added by order of the unit commander.
  • The Mosquito aircraft carrying Highball bombs in the film use an extendable air-scoop fitted to the rear of the bomb bay. Real Highball aircraft used a pair of scoops fitted either side of the fuselage, under the wing roots. This could be a modified version of the release system, designed to allow for transfer to another aircraft, similar to a complete engine 'power egg'.

Movie Mistakes[]

Corrections[]

  • A German pilot drops a roll of film to the RAF commanders to let them know that POWs are being housed in the chateau. When viewed the film shows the POWs arriving in three US-made GMC trucks escorted by a US-made half-track - all vehicles just have German insignia slapped on the sides to make them look authentic. It wouldn't be the first time that an armed force was re-using captured and then re-flagged vehicles. In historical documents there are many cases of re-flagged vehicles, notably in the European campaign.[2]
